Triveni Continental Kings at the Global Chess League 2026: Squad, Owners and History

Who they are

The Triveni Continental Kings are one of the six franchise teams of the Tech Mahindra Global Chess League and the only team to have won it twice. They won the first season in Dubai in 2023 after a final that went to sudden death, defended the title in London in 2024, and lost the 2025 final in Mumbai to Alpine SG Pipers after winning the round robin by nine match points.

The franchise is owned by Triveni Sports Pvt Ltd, a joint venture of Triveni Turbine Ltd and Triveni Engineering & Industries Ltd, under owner Dhruv Sawhney. The team name has not changed since 2023. Loek van Wely coaches the team, as he did in 2024.

Alireza Firouzja has been the Icon since 2024. Wei Yi has played for the Kings in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026.

The 2026 squad

Alireza Firouzja is the Icon of the 2026 squad. Wei Yi and Aravindh Chithambaram play the two Superstar men's boards, Zhu Jiner and Alexandra Kosteniuk play the two Superstar women's boards, and Pranav V is the Prodigy. Loek van Wely is the coach.

Firouzja, Wei Yi, Zhu Jiner and Kosteniuk all played for the Kings in 2025, so the 2026 squad has more continuity than any other team. Kosteniuk was Player of the Match in the 2024 final, and Firouzja was Male Player of the Tournament in 2025.

2023, Dubai, as Triveni Continental Kings: Champions; first in the round robin, 18 match points, 79 game points. Levon Aronian was the Icon, with Wei Yi, Yu Yangyi, Kateryna Lagno, Sarasadat Khademalsharieh and Jonas Buhl Bjerre. The Kings were last after six matches with two wins, then won their last four to finish first. The final against upGrad Mumba Masters was level after two rapid matches (9-7, 3-12) and two blitz matches (5-14, 13-7) and was decided in sudden death, when Bjerre beat Javokhir Sindarov with Black. Bjerre was King of the match and Lagno Queen of the match.

2024, London, as Triveni Continental Kings: Champions; second in the round robin, 18 match points, 99 game points. Alireza Firouzja joined as Icon, with Wei Yi, Teimour Radjabov, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Valentina Gunina and Javokhir Sindarov. The Kings lost both round-robin matches to PBG Alaskan Knights, 3-15 and 8-12, and qualified for the final on the last day by beating Alpine SG Pipers 9-7. In the final they beat PBG 9-7 with White and 13-7 with Black. Kosteniuk beat Tan Zhongyi in both matches and was Player of the Match.

2025, Mumbai, as Triveni Continental Kings: Runners-up; first in the round robin, 24 match points, 102 game points. Firouzja, Wei Yi, Vidit Gujrathi, Kosteniuk, Zhu Jiner and Marc'Andria Maurizzi won eight of ten matches and finished nine match points clear. Firouzja won his first five games and was Male Player of the Tournament. In the final the Kings lost 2-4 and 1.5-4.5 to Alpine SG Pipers; Firouzja lost on time in a winning position against Fabiano Caruana in the second match.
