The tournament has run every January since 1938, first in Beverwijk and since 1968 in Wijk aan Zee, a village on the Dutch coast small enough that the players, the amateurs and the spectators all walk the same streets. It began as the Hoogovens tournament, named for the steelworks next door, became Corus in 1999 and Tata Steel in 2011, and the editions are numbered in one unbroken series across all three names. The nickname "the Wimbledon of chess" follows the same logic: one storied venue, every January, with the best players in the world expected to show up.

The organisers had not published the exact 2027 dates as of late August 2026, but the shape of the event barely changes from year to year. This is the rhythm to plan around:

• —13 rounds: One round per playing day, spread over about sixteen days with rest days in between. The 2026 edition ran from 16 January to 1 February.
• —Round 1 on the first Saturday: The tournament opens on a Friday evening with side events; the Masters and Challengers start the next afternoon.
• —2 pm local start: Rounds start at 2 pm Dutch time, which is 6:30 pm IST, so the games run into the Indian night.
• —Final round on a Sunday: All Masters games of the last round start together, and since 2025 any tie for first is broken the same day in blitz, then sudden death.

How the tournament works

Two invitational groups of fourteen play in the same hall. The Masters is the top group: fourteen of the world's best, hand-picked by the tournament director, in a single round robin, so every player meets every other player once across 13 classical rounds. The Challengers runs the same format one level down, mixing rising juniors with established grandmasters, and its winner is promoted into the next year's Masters. That promotion rule is how young players break into the elite: win the Challengers and a Masters invitation is yours.

A round robin rewards a different skill than a knockout. There is no hiding behind a safe draw streak: the standings are decided by whole points over thirteen games, so champions here tend to be the players who can beat the lower half of the field on demand. Abdusattorov's winning score in 2026 was 9 of 13, five wins and eight draws against the strongest field of the year. Since 2025, a tie for first no longer splits the title: the tied players go straight into a blitz tiebreak on the final day, then sudden death if needed.

Around the two main groups, Wijk aan Zee fills with amateur tournaments. Club players of every strength compete in the same village during the same weeks, which is the part of the event no other elite tournament reproduces. One more tradition survives from the first post-war edition in 1946: the closing banquet still opens with pea soup.

Champions and records

The winners' list doubles as a history of modern chess. These are the current champion, the champion before him, and the two record holders:

One record runs the other way. Of the fifteen undisputed world champions since the tournament began in 1938, only five never won it: Alexander Alekhine, Vasily Smyslov, Bobby Fischer, Ding Liren and Gukesh. Gukesh came within one tiebreak of crossing off his name in 2025 and arrives in 2027 fresh from his world championship match against Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva, which finishes in mid-December, about a month before Wijk aan Zee starts.

The India angle

Viswanathan Anand won the tournament five times, still the most by any player except Carlsen, and the current generation has picked the event up where he left it. Praggnanandhaa won the 2025 edition by beating Gukesh, the reigning world champion, in the blitz tiebreak; both had finished the thirteen rounds level on 8.5 points. In 2027 the question is whether Gukesh can finally take the one elite title that has escaped him.

The time zone works for Indian viewers. Rounds start at 2 pm Dutch time, 6:30 pm IST, so the critical middlegame hours land in the late Indian evening rather than the middle of the night. The same sponsor also runs a sister event in Kolkata, the Tata Steel Chess India rapid and blitz; at its January 2026 edition Nihal Sarin won the open rapid and Wesley So the open blitz.

Wijk aan Zee is the first elite classical event of 2027, and it lands straight after a packed autumn: the Olympiad in Samarkand in September and the world championship match in Geneva through mid-December. The 2027 field is announced in stages from the autumn onward, so the line-up firms up while those events run.
